The study is composed of three parts. Part one is the development of the strategic context. Afghanistan’s recent macroeconomic performance and developments in the banking and financial sector was described. Part two was on the importance of agriculture to the Afghan economy which includes a review of the policy and academic literature on access to agricultural credit. Part three was a review on recent developments in information and communications technology, including mobile money and mobile-ATMs and value chain financing. A case study of a mobile money application “Farmers Friend” that has the potential to revolutionize access to credit to unbanked farming communities in Afghanistan was presented.

- Development of the strategic context in terms of Afghanistan’s recent macroeconomic performance and developments in the banking and financial sector.

- Description and study conducted on importance of agriculture to the Afghan economy including review of the policy and academic literature on access to agricultural credit.

- Presentation of case studies of Indonesia and Thailand as well as on mobile money application “Farmers Friend” that has the potential to revolutionize access to credit to unbanked farming communities in Afghanistan.

- Review of recent developments in information and communications technology, including mobile money and mobile-ATMs and value chain financing.
